Hundreds treated at medical camps

Ten year old Rohit Lama* travelled for two days with his grandmother to reach the recent ear camp in Bajang district.

Rohit had had trouble with his ears for as long as he could remember, always suffering with some discharge and pain. He was treated in a local health post but he did not get well.

Rohit’s hearing got worse and worse. Whenever possible he went to school but it was difficult as his hearing was bad and his speech unclear. His friends moved up in classes but Rohit had to repeat years. He is now studying in year 2 but should be in year 4.

New Chairman for INF Australia

INF Australia’s Chairman Graham Morrison is stepping down from the role he has held for the last 11 years in order to become Chairman of the newly formed board of INF*.

Graham’s last INF Australia Council meeting took place in late April, when Council member Richard Groves was elected to take his place. Richard is married with four children and has been a member of the INF Council for one year. He works for an accountancy firm in Sydney and attends Bobbin Head Anglican Church in Sydney.

ACFID: "Genuine commitment"

The Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) has acknowledged that INF Australia has met the council's criteria for Annual Reporting and self-assessment for 2012.

INF Australia is a long standing member of ACFID, the peak body for international development organisations in Australia, which seeks to unite Australia’s non-government aid and international development organisations to strengthen their collective impact against poverty.

The Biomedical Engineering Association (BEAN), during its 5th National Conference, held 29 March in Kathmandu, has congratulated INF for its contribution towards the development of human resources in the health care sector and the field of Biomedical Engineering in Nepal.

On this occasion, Mr Shital Subedi, Liaison Officer of INF received the Certificate of Appreciation (pictured) from Dr Praveen Mishra, Secretary of Ministry of Health and Population, Government of Nepal, the Chief Guest of the ceremony.

A renewed life free of TB

Naresh Bahadur Khatri (34) is from Beldandi, Kanchanpur district though he now lives in Bardiya with his wife and two children.

He was constantly unemployed and decided to go to India, alone, where he found work as a guard for a private company in Goa.

After a few years he fell ill and was diagnosed with TB. He immediately started TB Treatment at a medical college in Goa.

Unfortunately the first regime of treatment didn't work and his condition didn’t improve. He was given a higher level of treatment but again his condition became worse.

Restoring dignity at Fistual camp

Every year around half a million women, mostly from developing countries, die in childbirth and almost three times as many are left with injuries, predominantly preventable, as a result of labour.

One of the most devastating of these injuries is obstetric fistula.

During a difficult and often unsuccessful birth a hole develops in the bladder leaving the woman, already exhausted and grieving, leaking urine.

She is continuously wet, her clothes stink, and her skin breaks out in sores.

Fundraising first for INF

Sunday 24 February saw a first for INF – a fundraising event held within Nepal, at the Royal Nepal Golf Club, Kathmandu.

Keen golfers and INF supporters from the UK, Brian and Anne Connelly organised the golfing competition, which was won by Major Ganaga Bahadur Gurung.

Businesses and golf clubs in UK and Nepal donated great raffle prizes, including an 18th hole flag from the world famous St Andrew’s golf course, Scotland.

BBCR4 appeal raises thousands.

A BBC Radio 4 appeal in aid of INF has raised over £10,000. The appeal, which was broadcast in the UK on 3 February, aimed to raise funds to provide wheelchairs to children in Nepal with cerebral palsy.

The success of the appeal will enable INF's Green Pastures Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre to order, and specially fit, at least 50 wheelchairs.

Delighted by the success of the appeal, Paul Roche, INF's superintendent at Green Pastures, explains the difference a wheelchair can make:

INF/UK 60th Anniversary Celebration

INF's BBC Radio 4 appeal

The presenter of the appeal is Anne Wafula Strike (Paralympic wheelchair racer, author and sporting ambassador). Anne is passionate about INF’s work.

World Leprosy Day

INF began leprosy work in 1952 when its first medical services were started in the ‘Shining Hospital’ in Pokhara. In 2009, prevalence of leprosy in Nepal dropped below one in 10,000.

However, new cases continue to occur and many patients need care for the rest of their lives. For some the stigma of leprosy means they are forced to leave their families.

Gyani Shah, born into a royal family of Salyan District on the 1st of Asar 1980 (June 1923), was one of the earliest leaders in the church in Kathmandu.

As a young girl she went to India to fulfil religious rites and be a jogi, eventually reaching Patna where she committed her life to Christ at the age of 19.

NZ surgeons at INF Ear Camp

A group of four from New Plymouth joined the INF Surgical Ear camp in Burtibang, seven-hours drive west of Pokhara, in November. The full team of 26, comprised of half Nepali staff and half expatriates, worked together for eight days servicing the community for ear disease.

Wayne Butt a New Plymouth ear, nose and throat surgeon shared his best memory, "The 7am pre-breakfast walk around the local trails and the township – a good way to start each day."

In August, we announced that INF will be doing an appeal on BBC Radio 4 in the UK. This will be to raise funds for wheelchairs for children with cerebral palsy in Nepal.

We are delighted to announce that we have now chosen a presenter for the appeal - Anne Wafula Strike [pictured].

Anne is a British Paralympic wheelchair racer, an author and a sporting ambassador.

In 2007, Anne was invited to a reception by Queen Elizabeth II for her work as a disabled athlete and for her involvement in charity work for people with disabilities.

INF in Nepal, through October and November, have been celebrating 60 years of serving Nepalis.

From its central office in Pokhara to all its programme centres across Nepal (Banke, Dang, Jumla, Kapilvastu, Kaski, Mugu and Surkhet) staff have been holding special one or two day events to mark the anniversary.

The events brought together INF in Nepal board members, staff, beneficiaries, local officals and church leaders as they lisented to speeches and watched a film on the history of INFs work.
