Today is World Health Day and this year’s theme is ‘Beat Diabetes’.

According to the World Health Organisation diabetes, most specifically type 2 diabetes, is an emerging epidemic that is prevalent around the globe and is linked to increased number of people who are overweight or inactive. Developing countries are not immune to the increased numbers of people who develop type 2 diabetes. In fact, 80% of diabetes deaths occur in low and middle-income countries.

Sadly, these deaths occur mainly due to a lacking awareness of type 2 diabetes as well insufficient health services and medicines. Complications arising from diabetes include blindness, amputation, kidney failure and cardio vascular disease, all of which can be avoided with proper care.

While INF has not specialised in the treatment of diabetes in Nepal before it is aware of the increasing numbers of people being diagnosed and living with type 2 diabetes and hopes to be able to respond to this growing need.

INF’s Green Pastures Hospital hopes to play a part in raising awareness about diabetes and improving the treatments available in Nepal. Their expertise in foot care for Leprosy patients is transferable to those living with diabetes and there are plans to develop programmes to support clients needing diabetic foot care as well as other diabetic needs.

This is yet another example of how Green Pastures Hospital is striving to serve the needs of Nepali people as INF seeks to bring fullness of life to all.
