Thousands of Nepalis lost their homes and livelihoods in the recent flooding. Houses were completely destroyed and many working in the agriculture sector had their seed stocks, crops and tools washed away. INF is now focused on rehabilitation measures that will help families get back on their feet.
INF is providing transitional shelters for over 1,000 people whose homes were demolished by the heavy monsoonal rain. The shelters are being constructed in areas where INF already works and has good relationships with the affected communities. The shelters are made from corrugated iron sheeting, tarpaulins, ropes, nails and other necessary tools.
“These households will benefit from improved living conditions, safety from the elements, increased protection particularly for groups at risk, and a reduced risk of contracting diseases,” says INF staffs.
INF is working with its partner Tearfund and local INF facilitated Self-Help Groups to ensure transitional shelters are constructed properly and can compliment reconstruction efforts in each community.
Households being given transition shelters will also receive much needed items to rebuild their livelihoods. INF is distributing tools and seeds as quickly as possible so families can prepare land for the approaching planting season.
INF is also working closely with Self-Help Groups in each community to ensure training around disaster resilience is an integral part of its Community Health and Development work; protecting and preparing communities against future natural disasters.
This focus on rehabilitation builds on INF’s role in the relief effort. INF continues to work with local authorities and partner organisations to distribute food and non-food relief packages, medical supplies, as well as health and hygiene kits.
